Australia’s War on Transparency

ABC journalist Sarah Ferguson has quickly won an enviable reputation for fearless, public-minded journalism devoted to getting at the truth.

So she was an appropriate person to present the annual A.N.Smith lecture in 2015 at the University of Melbourne on the subject of the rapidly diminishing accountability of our political leaders and their clampdown on the availability of information.

This was most vividly evident in the secrecy over boat arrivals and the government’s refusal to grant journalists’ access to the virtual concentration camps Australia is using to imprison asylum seekers offshore.

Sarah’s talk is entitled “Freedom from Information: Australia’s War on Transparency”
